HSA/FSA Coverage: You can use your HSA/FSA for medical massage but it must be for a specific diagnosed condition, not just relaxation, requiring a doctor’s Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) detailing the condition, treatment plan and duration to qualify as a qualified medical expense. You will need documentation from a doctor or chiropractor, to get approval from your HSA/FSA provider before using your funds for therapeutic massage.
Steps to Use HSA/FSA for Massage:
  1. Consult Your Doctor: Discuss your chronic pain, injury, or specific medical condition (like fibromyalgia, sciatica, TMJ, post-surgery recovery) with your physician or chiropractor.
  2. Get a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN): Your provider must write a formal letter stating:
    • The specific medical condition being treated (e.g., chronic back pain, carpal tunnel).
    • Why massage therapy is medically necessary for your treatment.
    • How many sessions are needed and for what duration.
  3. Check with Your Provider: Confirm with your HSA/FSA administrator if they require specific forms or if they accept LMNs and receipts for massage therapy.
  4. Pay & Document: Pay for the medically necessary massage, keep detailed receipts, signed copy of your session and your LMN; your provider may reimburse you or process the payment directly.
    Key Things to Remember:
    • Not for General Relaxation: Massages for general wellness or stress relief usually don’t qualify.
    • State Licensing: Ensure your massage therapist is licensed and certified for medical massage therapy.
    • Specific Conditions: Examples that often qualify include chronic pain, muscle injuries, post-surgical rehab, and certain neurological issues.
